A senator representing Yobe North Constituency, Ahmed Lawan, has been elected President of the 9th Senate.
Mr Lawan polled 79 votes against lone challenger, Mr Ndume’s 28 votes. 107 senators participated in the election.
Celebration in the chamber has commenced as senators in Mr Lawan’s camp took turns to shake hands with the incoming President of the Senate.
The clerk of the National Assembly, Sani Omolori, announced the outcome of the election at 12:16pm.
He said Mr Lawan scored 79 votes against Mr Ndume’s 28 votes.
“Senator-elect Ahmed Lawan, having won the highest number of votes is therefore returned elected,” Mr Omolori said.
Mr Omolori therefore administered the oath of office to the new President of the Senate.
