A former Head of State, Gen Yakubu Gowon (retd.), has revealed why he and another former Head of State, Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), amongst others saved former President Olusegun Obasanjo from impeachment in 2007.
According to the former Head of State, Obasanjo was able to complete his tenure as President because of the key roles he and others played by speaking to the then Speaker, House of Representatives, Ghali Na’Abbah and the Senate President, Pius Anyim, to let peace reign.
This was borne out of the need to preserve the seat of the President. Gowon, spoke at the Maj Gen Emmanuel Abisoye Foundation lecture, at the University of Abuja, said his action was informed by the need to save Obasanjo’s successors from recurring embarrassments by the legislature.
Gowon said: “I can assure you that we had some very important discussions and I know that we had to appeal to him and the President of the Senate not to impeach Obasanjo and of course, because of the respect they had for us, they listened to us.
