Participants poured black oil over each other and covered themselves in grease to celebrate the traditional festivities “Cascamorras” in the Spanish town of Baza on Friday.
According to the legend, the quirky festival dates back 500 years and involves Baza and its neighboring town Guadix fighting for the possession right over a virgin statue, International Business Times reports.
While Baza was where the statue had been unearthed, it was a worker named Cascamorras from Guadix who first discovered it.
To lay claim to the statue, the Bazans decided that Cascamorras could have the statue if he could leave their town without a stain on his clothes. The man failed because the Bazans smeared him black from head to toe. The tradition survived and is celebrated by residents from both towns every year.
